July 18 –
Greta Feeney, voice teacher, performer and music historian, explores the sacred Hindu chant called Om.
Sometimes referred to as the sound of the universe, the Om chant, or mantra, is considered a source of wisdom and healing and commonly practiced in Yoga and meditation. When sung as a chant, the Om consists of four syllables: A, U, M, and a silent syllable. The three letters symbolize creation, preservation, and liberation. The silent syllable symbolizes the deep quietness of the infinite.
Greta, a Nantucket native, is a graduate The Julliard School, holds a doctoral degree from SUNY Stonybrook, where she studied how Marian cults influenced the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. She debuted as a performer at age 21 with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and participated in more than 20 productions with the San Francisco Opera. She also performs regularly in the Atheneum’s Great Hall.
