Hand-carved Slate Lettering with Michael Updike, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Member Fee $350; Nonmember Fee $400. Learn the ancient art of cutting letters in stone. Stone Carver Michael Updike will instruct you in the basics of V-cut letter cutting in slate. As the ancient Greeks and Romans did with a simple chisel and mallet each student will learn the technique of carving expressive and crisp letters into slate. The first day, participants will learn the proper grip of the chisel and how the mallet powers it to cut fine lines and valleys into the slate. They will practice straight lines, curves, serifs, and termination points.  The following day, with attention to composition, proportion and spacing, students will carve a three-letter inscription of their own.
